The Other Notion Mention Menus

Today I’m bringing you a little fun feature-fact that might be basic to the pros, but a lot of people (pros included) have no idea about in Notion. Any time I do this on live calls people are like, “hang on, what did you just do?!” as I’m able to link to the content I’m thinking about much faster in certain cases.

@-mentions

You know the “@” mention menu that comes up when you type an “@” in Notion’s editor? You probably did! Notion talks about it a lot in standard documentation. We call these “@-mentions” for a reason: you can mention (insert) a person or date from this menu.

It also happens to show pages you might want to link to at the bottom of the list, but you have to skip past dates and people mentions that also match your search to reach it…

@-mentions prefer dates and people

[[-mentions

Did you know there’s also a “[[” keyboard shortcut which opens a menu that prefers page links when you’re intending to insert a mention of a page? Try searching with [[ instead of @ the next time you want to insert a link to a page.

This menu happens to show two other options at the bottom of the list:

  1. “New {Name} sub-page” — inserts a page in the current page.
  2. “New {Name} page in…” — inserts a page in a selected database or page.

But, yet again, you have to skip past existing pages to get to these options…

[[-mentions prefer pages

+mentions

But! Did you know there’s a “+{Name}” menu that prefers creating new pages? Type + immediately followed by the name of the page you want to create to reveal this version…

+mentions prefer creation over insertion

Use the right -mention

The “@-mention” menu has everything you might want to mention, but you can save yourself quite a bit of time in search by knowing a bit more about these less well-known editor entry points when mentioning things.

Did you know all of these entry points? You’re in a rare class!
